  • 5.5 METs: Moving furniture, heavy lifting
  • 6.0 METs: Shoveling snow, intense yard work

Scrubbing a bathroom at 4.0 METs burns twice the energy of tidying at 2.0 METs. That's not opinion. It's measurable metabolic demand.

In Share the Load, a task at 2.0 METs gets a baseline 1.0x multiplier. A task at 5.0 METs? That becomes 2.2x. Same hour of your life, very different toll on your body.

Not All Thinking Drains You the Same Way

Mental effort also has levels. The calculator sorts cognitive work into three tiers:

Exhaustion on its own is manageable. What makes it corrosive is when it feels unfair, or when nobody acknowledges it.

When Nobody Sees What You Did

You spend an hour on meal planning: checking the pantry, looking up recipes, thinking about allergies and preferences, building a shopping list. Your partner glances at the list and assumes it took five minutes.

A cleaner twice a month. Grocery delivery. Meal kits. If your budget allows it, outsourcing the hardest tasks isn't indulgent. It's a reasonable trade: money for sanity. Your energy and wellbeing are worth something.

Let Some Things Be "Good Enough"

Bathrooms every two weeks instead of every week. Simple dinners instead of elaborate ones. Perfectionism amplifies exhaustion. In areas that don't really matter, give yourself permission to ease up.
